The Wormhole

The Wormhole is the swirling portal at spawn, and it's where enchanting happens on Ancients. There's no enchant table. You charge an item with Ancient Energy, drop it into the void, and roll enchants from a ring of options around it.

How enchanting works

  1. Charge your item. Mining fills your pickaxe with stored Ancient Energy automatically. The item's tooltip shows how much it's holding and how much the next level needs.
  2. Drop it in. Drop the item (default Q) into the Wormhole. With enough stored energy it's pulled in, and a ring of enchant options opens around it. Each option shows the enchant, the level it would reach and its chance.
  3. Left-click an option to roll it. The roll happens on the spot and spends one level's worth of the item's energy. On a success the item gains the enchant level. On a failure the item stays exactly as it was: same level, same enchants, no fail counter. Only the energy (and any dust) for that roll is gone.
  4. Keep clicking. The option you clicked comes back in the same spot as the same enchant with a fresh chance, until that enchant is maxed. Only then does the spot deal a different enchant. The item stays in the Wormhole until it runs out of energy or reaches its level cap.

The real chance is always printed on the option before you click. For the catalogue of what can roll, see Enchants.

Your very first pickaxe enchant and your very first gear enchant always land.

Dust and the 100% roll

  • Sneak and left-click an option to spend dust and take it to 100%, then roll it. Dust comes out of your Dust Satchels first, then loose Enchant Dust. Each option shows how much dust a sneak-click would cost. If you are short, it spends what you have and waits.
  • Dust you drop onto the ring goes toward the next roll, and any left over carries to the roll after.
  • An undusted roll is capped at 99%. Only dust (or a free Surge) gets a roll to 100%.

Surges

Every 10 to 12 rolls, the next new option is a Surge. It glows gold and is one of two kinds:

  • Double levels: if it lands, the enchant gains two levels instead of one.
  • Free 100%: the roll is guaranteed, with no dust needed.

A double-level Surge only appears when the enchant and the item have room for two more levels. An Enchant Reroll never deals a Surge, and rerolling keeps one that is already on the ring.

Taking your item back

  • Click Take out on the ring, or walk away, to get your item back early with its unspent Ancient Energy. Leaving it idle for 5 minutes does the same.
  • Logging out or using /hub no longer burns the energy either.
  • The item's options, and any dust still on them, are saved for the next time you drop that item in, so leaving is never a free reroll.

Other tools

  • Enchant Reroll: drop one onto the ring for fresh options in every spot except a Surge.
  • Enchant Catalysts no longer work in the Wormhole. They still save a failed enchant orb.
  • Gang upgrades: certain gang perks improve your Wormhole success odds.
  • Sets: if you track a set template in /sets, options it still wants are starred and glow gold.

Mining enchants on armour

Mining enchants also roll on armour through the Wormhole, competing with combat enchants for slots. The Godly versions come from Enchant Orbs. See Mining Enchants on Armour for the full list.

Good to know

  • What goes in: Ancient pickaxes, Ancient gear (armour and weapons), shard satchels, contraband satchels, gen breakers, Dust Satchels and the Excavation Brush. Satchels and gen breakers level only. They don't roll enchants.
  • The Excavation Brush enchants like a pickaxe. Its first enchant is a brush-only Efficiency (up to V, 20% faster brushing per level), and each roll costs 10M energy times the brush level you are buying.
  • What's refused: entangled pickaxes (break the link with /unentangle first) and Rift event pickaxes, which can never be kept or enchanted.
  • Drop a whole set at once. Up to 10 items can wait. Each piece drops in when the one before it is done.
  • Restarts are safe: if the server restarts while your item is in the Wormhole, it's returned to you when you're back.
  • Calcite enchants have their own ritual at the separate Calcite Wormhole inside Cavernheart in the Calcite Caverns. See Calcite Enchants.

This page sits under Currencies alongside the other economy sinks; the Wormhole is where the special items above end up getting spent.

Version history

v4.0.0 (Map 4)

  • Enchanting is much faster. Your pickaxe or gear stays in the Wormhole until it runs out of Ancient Energy, and each left-click rolls the option you're looking at. The option you click comes back as the same enchant with a new chance, until that enchant is maxed.
  • Sneak and left-click an option to spend dust and take it to 100%, then roll it. Dust comes out of your Dust Satchels first, then loose Enchant Dust. Dust dropped onto the ring goes to the next roll, and any left over carries on.
  • Click Take out or walk away to get your item back early with its unspent energy. Logging out or /hub no longer burns the energy. The ring and its dust are saved for the item's next drop.
  • Drop your whole set in at once. Each piece drops in when the one before it is done.
  • Every 10 to 12 rolls, the next new option is a Surge: double levels if it lands, or a free 100% roll.
  • Enchant Catalysts no longer work in the Wormhole. Enchant Rerolls are rarer from most sources.
  • The Excavation Brush can be enchanted here like a pickaxe.
  • Double-level Surges now grant both pickaxe levels correctly. (v4.0.2)

v3.0.0

  • A failed enchant no longer levels your item or adds a fail. The item comes back exactly as it went in, and the attempt still spends the energy you charged.
  • Enchant Dust is no longer capped at 99% success. Dust an enchant to a guaranteed 100%, and dropping your Dust Satchel spends up to 100% on the enchant you're looking at.
  • Rift event pickaxes can no longer be dropped into either Wormhole, and entangled pickaxes still need /unentangle first.
  • Calcite Charge Satchels are gone from the list of things you can level here; Dust Satchels and Contraband Satchels level here instead.

v2.0.0

  • Drop your Dust Satchel while enchanting to instantly spend pooled dust and boost the enchant you're looking at toward 99% success, no more flicking dust in one at a time.
  • Mining enchants now roll on armour through the Wormhole, competing with combat enchants for slots.
  • Calcite enchant odds on pickaxes halved at the Calcite Wormhole (Cavern Luck, Cataclysmic Shatter, Prismatic Efficiency).
